And so we bid adieu to a great bucking horse by the name of Grated Coconut. The big horse is just 13 years old and last year the Stampede Ranch stated that as long as he wanted to buck, they'd keep him in the line-up. Part of the Born to Buck program he is out of a mare that is now 18 and still bucking but apparently he seems to be more inclined these days to stay at home and hang with the girls creating more little Coconuts. He will be officially retired the last day of the Calgary Stampede this year. At 1450 lbs, it's no wonder that he wasn't ridden a whole lot of times and has been voted by the cowboys that got on him as the Bucking Horse of the Year numerous times. As a matter of fact, he retires this year as current Canadian and World Champion and will continue to be the foundation of the Born to Buck program.
Who knows, maybe a couple of years down the road he'll decide that he's had enough of the nagging of the mares and want to crack out again. What a life, huh? To work the equivalent of three minutes a year, doing what you like to do, lounging around with the girls and eating the rest of the time. When I come back I want to be a bucking horse!
